Green Card
Green Card
A Green Card, officially known as the Form I-551 Permanent Resident Card, serves as proof of lawful permanent resident (LPR) status in the United States. While no longer green in color, this card grants holders the legal right to live and work permanently in the U.S. Although Green Card holders enjoy many benefits, including employment authorization and travel privileges, the card does not confer the right to vote in U.S. elections.

Lawful permanent resident status can be obtained through several pathways, including:
- Admission via an immigrant visa
- Adjustment of status for individuals already in the U.S.
- Grant of asylum or refugee status
- Cancellation of removal proceedings for eligible individuals who demonstrate extreme hardship
Maintaining Green Card status requires careful attention to legal compliance. Holders must avoid deportable offenses and ensure they do not abandon their residency by living outside the U.S. for extended periods. Failure to maintain status may result in loss of permanent residency and removal proceedings.
