Business and Work Visas
Business and Work Visas
Navigating U.S. business and employment immigration laws can be complex, especially given that there is no single, universal “work permit” that applies to all foreign nationals. U.S. citizens, nationals, and lawful permanent residents are automatically authorized to work in the United States, but foreign nationals must secure the proper visa or employment authorization before beginning any form of work.

Many nonimmigrant visa categories allow employment in the U.S., but the scope of that employment is often restricted to a specific employer, position, or duration. Common work visa categories include:
- H-1B visas for specialty occupations requiring a bachelor’s degree or higher.
- L-1 visas for intra-company transfers of executives, managers, and specialized knowledge workers.
- O-1 visas for individuals with extraordinary ability in sciences, arts, education, business, or athletics.
- E-1 and E-2 visas for treaty traders and investors.
- H-2B visas for temporary non-agricultural workers.
In addition, Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) may be issued to certain nonimmigrants, asylum seekers, DACA recipients, or individuals with pending adjustment of status applications. These EADs are generally valid for a limited period and may need to be renewed to maintain work authorization.
