Should you see Killer Sally on Netflix?

by Joseph D. Nohavicka

October is done. It is supposed to be Domestic Violence Awareness month, but besides a few memes, we didn’t see much about it. Tough subject.  Very much like roaches in NYC. You don’t hear much about that either. But out of the corner of your eye you finally make out the brown antenna just jutting out over the door jamb. Maybe a ladybug? Nah. You are now a sub tenant.

Signs of domestic violence are like that: barely detectable. If you’re at someone’s apartment and you are the one who spots that antenna over the doorway, do you say something?  Well, an emotion springs in to being, doesn’t it?  Shame.

Reminds one of the dialogue in The Edge:

You know, I once read an interesting book which said that, uh, most people lost in the wilds, they, they die of shame.Charles Morse
What?Stephen
Yeah, see, they die of shame. "What did I do wrong? How could I have gotten myself into this?" And so they sit there and they... die. Because they didn't do the one thing that would save their lives.Charles Morse

Shame is the hidden axis in Killer Sally, as it is for the explanation of domestic violence victimology. The victim is ashamed that this could happen to them. The perpetrator is ashamed of what they are. Witnesses are ashamed for both.

This three-episode documentary is important, pitiful, and watchable. If you practice law in this area it is crucial viewing. Armchair trial lawyers will have a field day.  And many  will speculate as to where where they fit in the pecking order in the continuum and ask themselves: Am I one of the strong? Or am I one of the weak?
