New York County District Attorney Cyrus (Cy) Vance, Jr. speaks about smartphone encryption and concealed carry laws

Last week our firm attended a Police Athletic League luncheon with New York County District Attorney Cyrus (Cy) Vance, Jr. who spoke to us at length on the rapidly changing landscape of smartphone encryption cases in NYC and across the country as well as current issues in concealed carry and gun control law and its effect on NYC.

Once the formation of the New Congress was completed, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act (CCRA) was introduced.  A short time after, a new but similar bill was introduced in the Senate. This legislation requires New York State and New York City to honor concealed- carry firearms permits issued in other states. The new legislation makes any permit to carry concealed weapons valid in New York City, regardless of where the permit was issued.

This would overrule New York’s restrictive permitting policies and effectively allow anyone from any state visiting NYC to carry a concealed weapon. Times square receives over 330,000 visitors per day.  The new laws will present many challenges to NYPD's ability to police and enforce against concealed firearms which are currently banned from NYC streets.
