Happy Birthday Hip-Hop

Happy Birthday, Hip Hop! On this day, August 11, in 1973, Hip-Hop was founded in New York City's very own Bronx.

On this day in 1973, at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, New York City, Clive Campbell—better known to history as DJ Kool Herc, founded Hip-Hop music.

Our firm represents DJ Kool Herc and is proud to have negotiated an agreement between DJ Kool Herc, Google and Music industry executive Steve Stoute celebrating August 11 as Hip Hop's birthday.

DJ Kool Herc and The birth of Hip-Hop:

DJ Kool Herc’s signature innovation came from using two turntables as many DJ's of the time did but not only to make a transition between two records, but as a way to switch back and forth repeatedly between two copies of the same record.  By doing so DJ Kool Herc extended the drum breaks that the listeners loved the most. Herc coined this invention "the Merry Go-Round" known today as the “break beat”

By the summer of 1973, DJ Kool Herc had been perfecting his break-beats for the better part of a year. His sister Cindy held a party on August 11 where Herc performed before his biggest crowd ever.  It was this precise moment and this party that would begin a musical revolution that has changed the world.  About six years later the term “hip hop” itself entered the popular vocabulary.
