New York Postpones New Jury Trials This Week

As of Monday, New York has put a pause on all new jury trials in an effort to respond to the increase of COVID-19 cases throughout the state.

What are the new rules?

  • Prospective jurors for new criminal or civil trials will not be summoned.
  • Prospective grand jurors will be instructed not to appear for grand jury service, while pending grand juries will continue until completion.
  • Future bench trials and hearings will be conducted virtually unless a deputy chief administrative judge rules otherwise.
  • In-person court conferences that adhere to social distancing guidelines will be permitted.
