PN Lawyers Honors DJ Kool Herc at the Grammys
PN Lawyers attended the 66th Annual Grammy Awards as a guest of our friend and long-time client, DJ Kool Herc.
Herc was presented with the Trustees Grammy Award alongside industry icons including Gladys Knight, N.W.A., and Donna Summer.
In music there are few styles that are distinctly American which have contributed to our nation's diverse musical landscape. They are Folk, Blues, Country and then there's Hip Hop – a genre that emerged from the streets of the Bronx in the 1970s, forever altering the course of music history. The Father of this revolution in music was DJ Kool Herc.
The story of how Herc and his sister Cindy Campbell created Hip Hop is one of ingenuity, creativity, and cultural fusion. Instead of simply playing records and by combining two turntables Herc pioneered the art of "breaking" – isolating and repeating the instrumental sections of songs, known as the "breakbeat," to create an electrifying rhythmic backdrop for MCs to rap over. This became the seed crystal for Hip Hop – from the beats and rhymes to the vibrant culture that surrounds it.
Over the years, Hip Hop has evolved and diversified, encompassing a myriad of styles and influences while remaining true to its roots. From its humble beginnings in the Bronx to its global dominance today, Hip Hop has transcended boundaries, bridging gaps between generations, cultures, and communities.
